RS Sailing & BIC Sport North America collaborate for Adventure Pathway

RS Sailing and BIC Sport North America Pioneer Adventure Sailing Programs in U.S. and Canada

RS Sailing and BIC Sport North America announce a joint effort to promote a new-age pathway for kids to find their passion for sailing.  The goal is to provide a more formalized learning track parallel to what has been done traditionally, and excite youth sailors with modern sailing craft.

Building on the success of the O’Pen BIC singlehand dinghy in North America, the RS Feva is the next logical step into a two person dinghy with asymmetrical spinnaker and skiff-like performance.  The RS Feva is also highly successful in other countries.  Both boats have proven to be extremely popular with youth sailors and equally acclaimed by sailing educators.   The bomb proof plastic construction, easy self rescue, and speedy modern rigging make them extremely practical for sailing programs.  No more fiberglass repairs!

As sailing programs struggle to retain sailors, the O’Pen BIC & RS Feva are perfectly suited to so-called “adventure” sailing programs that focus more on fun and seamanship than just racing.  And for those aspiring to competition, there is already an existing schedule of events, and look for more O’Pen BIC/Feva joint events in the future.  O’Pen BIC & Feva regattas are known for new formats that challenge boat handling and that kids love.

The O’Pen BIC -> RS Feva collaboration coincides perfectly with new initiatives to excite and retain youth sailors with alternatives to the traditional pathway, such as the Grow Sailing initiative.  The partnership will include a promotional tour and events to showcase just how fun the adventure pathway can be in modern boats, and how it can extend from first steps afloat right through to adult sailing.

The O’Pen BIC is a 9ft singlehander that uses recyclable materials in a skiff-like hull and new-age rig. Just two minutes to rig, a completely self-bailing, no maintenance, and less expensive sailboat. The O’Pen BIC is ideally suited from beginners to advanced, from 60 to 130 lbs.

The RS Feva is a 12ft doublehander suitable for two sailors from approximately 200 to 250 lbs combined. It also has a fully battened mylar mainsail, as well as a jib and asymmetric spinnaker. The RS Feva is a logical graduation from the O’Pen BIC into the social element of two-person sailing with asymmetric fun and modern skiff-like performance.

Frigid Digit Regatta Report

10968386_10104677280783748_1200828952668646242_nThe annual Frigid Digit Regatta took place last weekend in Seattle. A four decade tradition in the Northwest, Frigid Digit is a weekend long regatta put on by the Seattle Laser Fleet each winter. This year’s event saw cold conditions and wind ranging from 15-30 knots on Saturday, providing epic conditions for five great races. No racing was held on Sunday due to lack of breeze.

Congratulations to all of the 40+ Laser and Optimist sailors who braved the cold and made this event a success. Top finishers in the Laser class were Derick Vranizan (14 pts), Bill Symes (29 pts), and Dalton Bergan (34 pts). Shout out as well to the CYC Seattle race committee for their efforts. Complete results are available below.

RS Aero Arrives at West Coast Sailing

RS Aero_Warehouse Photoshoot_1_blogsizeThe new year is off to a fast and exciting start with the long-awaited arrival of the new RS Aero. Our first container arrived several weeks ago and we were immediately impressed with the fit and finish of these new boats. If the international buzz around this boat is any indication, this is the first of many RS Aero shipments. We’re looking forward to getting these first boats out to eager owners and spending a bit of time on the water ourselves. Everyone around the office is looking forward to getting out and blasting around. The RS Aero was one of two boats we featured at the annual Portland Boat Show. This show is one of the smaller boat shows we attend but always an excellent event. In addition to the RS Aero, we also had the popular Hobie Wave on display.

Thank you to friends new and old who stopped by the booth to say hello and talk sailboats. It was great to see you! A huge thank you as well to our local print shop, Pro Ad Co, who worked overtime to create all of the signage. This is the best our display has ever looked! RS Sailing 2014 Round-Up

2014 was another remarkable year for RS Sailing. More RS boats are being sailed in North America than ever before, new events are being created, and excitement continues to grow. Here is a recap of the progress made in 2014 and a look at what is in store for 2015 and beyond.

RS Aero Lift Off

The RS Aero, shown in the photo above, launched in January at the London Boat Show. This groundbreaking single-hander has generated interest around the work with over 500 boats already sold. The first West Coast Aeros arrived just a few weeks ago with more on the way for early 2015. Read George’s review, as published by Scuttlebutt Sailing News.

RS Feva’s in San Diego

In March, Coronado Yacht Club hosted a first of it’s kind RS Feva Clinic. British RS Feva Coach Jonathan Lewis joined a group of keen young sailors for a weekend of instruction, racing, and fun. We have seen great interest in the RS Feva in Southern California and look forward to more events in 2015.

Visit to RS Sailing

In April, George and Phil traveled to the UK to visit the RS Sailing headquarters in Southampton. The boys toured their warehouse and offices, and had the chance to test sail the new RS Aero at Hayling Island.

RS Feva’s in Hawaii

The RS Feva also reached Hawaii this year, with it’s racing debut at the second annual Dinsmoor Trophy Regatta. Read a full write up on the event here.

Venture Keel Adaptive Sailing

RS Sailing introduced a keeled version of the popular RS Venture this year, and with it an innovative adaptive sailing package. With more and more programs offering disabled sailing courses, this new version is sure to make sailing an option for many new sailors.

A Look Ahead to 2015

The coming year promises to be an exciting one for RS Sailing in North America. We are excited to continuing working with RS to reach more sailors and help more people get out on the water. You can visit RS Sailing and representatives from West Coast Sailing at the 2015 U.S. Sailing Symposium in January in New Orleans, the Portland Boat Show, and at the annual Strictly Sail Boat Show in San Francisco in April.
