A life jacket is the most important piece of gear for anyone spending time on the water. Shop our selection of great fitting and durable US Coast Guard approved life jackets, Buoyancy Aids, Inflatable PFDs, and pinnies for adult and junior sailors.
Sailing life jackets are an essential part of your apparel kit and the one piece of gear that can truly save your life. The importance of a life vest, especially for kids, is obvious and cannot be taken lightly by anyone who gets on a small sailboat. Be safe and enjoy your time on the water with these comfortable and stylish life jackets. We carry US Coast Guard approved life jackets as well as CE approved Buoyancy Aids and Inflatable PFDs. Options available for men, women, and kids in a variety of styles, colors, and price points, so we have something for every budget.
US Coast Guard Approved Life Jackets These are US Coast Guard approved, Type III life jackets (sometimes called personal flotation devices or PFDs), and meet all requirements for US Sailing. Type III life jackets are the most common among small boat sailors. They have more foam buoyancy than a buoyancy aid and are designed to keep a person facing upwards in the water, even when unconscious. This is the primary safety benefit over a buoyancy aid and why a proper USCG approved life jacket is recommended for most sailors, particularly youth sailors and those who are poor swimmers.
Buoyancy AidsPopular in Europe, buoyancy aids are typically lighter and more slim fitting than USCG approved PFDs. They have less foam buoyancy than a proper life jacket and will not keep a person upright in the water if unconscious. These should only be used by experienced swimmers and in conditions where there is access to quick rescue and/or sailing in sheltered water.
Inflatable PFDsDesigned for larger boat sailing, these vests automatically inflate in water. Popular among keelboat and offshore sailors. They are not recommended for dinghy sailors who may more routinely enter the water in the event of a capsize as this will trigger the inflation. They offer similar flotation properties to a standard Type III life jacket.
Pinnies & Spandex VestsTypically worn over a life jacket or buoyancy aid, these stretchy spandex tops help prevent snags. They are often decorated for team sailing. By no means a required piece of gear, they have become popular among many dinghy sailors to represent clubs and sailing teams.

A wetsuit is a popular and versatile garment for spring and fall sailing, offering core warmth and the ability to add or subtract layers as conditions change. A drysuit offers full body protection from the elements and a favorite for cold weather sailing!
Sailing deep into the cold of winter? A drysuit is a must for any dinghy sailor sailing in extremely cold conditions. Waterproof fabric and seals at the wrist and neck mean your drysuit is fully submersible and will keep you warm and dry inside. Layer up with a combination of base layers and mid layers depending on the conditions.
Fabric - Four layer, fully waterproof and breathable fabric is the standard for sailing drysuits. While the brand name of the fabric may vary, all options keep water out while allowing moisture to escape, keeping you comfortable during active sailing.
Neck & Wrist Seals - Seals at the neck and wrist fit tightly to keep water out. These are either made from latex, neoprene, or a combination of the two. Older drysuits featured latex seals almost exclusively, but advances in fabric have allowed the use of softer, easier to handle neoprene fabrics that offer the same protection with a higher degree of comfort.
Booties - The base of a drysuit features two sewn in booties, which complete the full protection of the suit. Typically these booties are made from latex rubber or from the same waterproof and breathable fabric as the rest of the drysuit. Like latex seals, latex booties were the standard for many years, but all drysuits we carry now feature fabric booties which offer more long term durability and are less likely to puncture.
Zipper - Getting in and out of a 100% waterproof, full body drysuit requires a large zipper. Like improvements found in seals and booties, the classic (and very heavy!) bronze zipper has been replaced with a flexible waterproof zipper that is easier to maintain and operate.
Internal Suspenders - Since a drysuit is one piece, many include a set of internal suspenders or straps that help keep the drysuit up and take some of the weight off of your shoulders. This feature is not found in all drysuits, but certainly makes wearing one a bit more comfortable if wearing for extended periods of time.
Think About Layers - While a drysuit keeps water out, maintaining a comfortable body temperature depends on what you wear under the drysuit. A proper system of base layers to wick moisture and mid layers for additional warmth is key to allowing the drysuit to perform at its full potential and to keeping you comfortable on the water.
Don't Forget Hat & Gloves - A warm hat and a good pair of cold weather sailing gloves will round out your kit nicely.
Lubricate the Zipper - Use Zip Tech Zipper Lubricant to maintain your zipper, but even chap stick will work in a pinch.
Rise with Fresh Water - If sailing in salt water, always try to rinse your drysuit with fresh water after use.
Store Properly - Store drysuit unfolded, unzipped, and away from dirt and dust.

Protecting your hands is as important as protecting anything on your boat. At West Coast Sailing, we carry a wide range of sailing gloves for fast action dinghy sailing, scholastic sailing, cruising, keelboat sailing, offshore sailing, and more. These are a must for late fall, winter, and early spring sailing. And finally, if you're looking for ultra lightweight grip, check out our selection of gardening grip gloves, designed to grip small diameter line and hold on tight. These are prefect for skiff sailors. We also carry several offshore gloves for use on larger boats or in cold sailing conditions.
Short Finger Gloves - Traditional style sailing gloves with reinforced palm and great durability for handling line on a sailboats. These gloves are cut to have all five fingers exposed for ease of tying knots and handling small hardware. Great for use in warmer weather.
Long Finger Gloves - Similar to Short Finger Gloves, except the middle three fingers are fully protected. While typically not designed for use in colder weather, these gloves do offer a bit more protection for your hands. Most short finger gloves are available in a matching long finger style.
Winter Gloves - Sailing gloves designed for sailing in colder conditions, typically made from a neoprene fabric for insulation with a reinforced palm for handling small lines.
Gardening Grip Gloves - Popular among skiff sailors who need excellent grip for small, technical lines, these lightweight gloves have a sticky grip surface that works well for short term use but won't hold up as long as a traditional Short Finger or Long Finger sailing glove.
Offshore Gloves - Heavy weight gloves designed for offshore or coastal sailing. These typically won't hold up as well when handling small lines on smaller boats, but are great for use on cruising boats with larger line diameters.

These garments are designed specifically with kids in mind but include all the best features found in adult gear. Not sure what size you need? Check out our sizing notes below where we've attempted to standardize sizing information across brands so that you can shop accordingly.
Many sailing brands make youth or junior specific gear, though each brand uses a slightly different sizing chart and scale for assigning junior sizing. Typically, Gill 'junior specific' gear is available in sizes Junior S, Junior M, and Junior L, which roughly correlates to a Kids 8, Kids 10, and Kids 12. The brands Ronstan, Stohlquist, and WinDesign follow a similar convention. Zhik sizing now includes a fourth size, so their range is Junior S to Junior XL, which correlates to Kids 8 - Kids 14. We understand this can be confusing, so our best advice is to please consult size charts on specific products for more information before making a sizing decision for your junior sailor.

Sail numbers are used to identify your boat on the water. Shop our extensive selection of sizes and colors for all sailboats.
Display your sail number on your sail with adhesive-backed sail numbers. These insignia numbers are made from a sticky back dacron material and do not add any significant weight to the sail. We carry pre-cut style "Euro" numbers and the traditional 'Digital 8' style numbers, which can be cut to any specific number, in a variety of number heights and colors. For Laser sails, select the 12 inch numbers in either Digital 8 or Euro style. We also stock Hobie Cat specific numbers for boats like the Hobie 16, Hobie 17, and Hobie 17 plus Tasar class specific red numbers.
Types of Sail Numbers
Digital 8 - These are universal numbers in the shape of the digit '8' from which you can cut any specific number you need.
Pre Cut / Euro - Unlike Digital 8 numbers, 'Euro' style or 'Pre Cut' numbers are cut to specific numbers or letters for a clean finish. These are preferred by many sailors as they have a higher quality look on the sail.

West Coast Sailing offer a wide selection of control lines for small sailboat vangs, cunninghams, outhauls, and more. These lines are low stretch, durable, and hold up well in cleats. Check our best selling options like Robline Dinghy Control and Marlow Excel Racing for performance applications or Sirius 500 for light duty or recreational use. Diameters between 2 mm and 8 mm available in a variety of colors.
4mm / 5mm Robline Sirius 500

4mm / 5mm Marlow Excel Racing
6mm Marlow DoubleBraid
6mm Robline Dinghy Control Line
If you are replacing an existing line, the easiest way to determine what diameter you need is to match what you already have. This can be done with a caliper or by close estimation with a tape measure. If you've previously used a 5mm control line and it has performed well, another 5mm line is likely a great choice. In most applications, there is some flexibility in the exact diameter that can be used. Most blocks, for example, have an 'ideal' diameter (ie, the line diameter that runs most effectively though the block's sheave) but also have a range so that you can run a slightly thinner or slightly thicker line. If you have a control line that is getting hung up in your rig, stepping down 1-2mm might help the halyard run more efficiently. If you have a larger boat or rig and want to run a thinner control line , consider a double braid high tech line that features a Dyneema or spectra core for strength.
1mm = 3/64 inch | 2mm = 5/64 inch | 3mm = 1/8 inch
4mm = 5/32 inch | 5mm = 3/16 inch | 6mm = 1/4 inch
7mm = 9/32 inch | 8mm = 5/16 inch | 9mm = 3/8 inch
10mm = 25/64 in | 11mm = 7/16 in | 12mm = 1/2 in
Two terms you will often see in line descriptions are 'double braid' and 'single braid', which refer to the way the line is constructed. At the most basic level, a double braid line has a cover and a core whereas a single braid does not, but there are other important distinctions to consider when making a line selection.
Single Braids are made up of either 8 or 12 strands that are braided into a circular pattern, half clockwise and half counter clockwise. This produces a line that is supple, absorbs twists, and tends not to kink. There are two types of single braid lines: performance single braids and polyester/blended single braids. Performance single braids are made from fibers with very low stretch and designed to handle extreme loads - think Dyneema, Spectra, or Vectran. Polyester/blended single braids, sometimes called hollow braid, are soft and easy to grip, built for sheets and hand-adjusted control lines. These are less common than performance single braid lines but recommended in a few specific applications.
Double Braids, sometimes called braid on braid, have a braided core within a braided outer jacket or cover. This creates a strong, durable, smooth-running line that is easy to handle. Double braids are used for the vast majority of all running rigging on sailboats including sheets, halyards and control lines for both cruising or racing. There are two types to consider: polyester double braids and high-tech double braids. Polyester double braids, found most commonly on recreational and cruising sailboats, have a polyester cover with polyester core. These are low maintenance, affordable, and long-lasting, while offering relatively low stretch and high working loads. For additional strength and minimal stretch, consider high-tech double braids. These lines typically feature a Dyneema or Spectra core (non-stretch) inside a polyester or polyester/dyneema blend cover for additional durability. They are more expensive but often the go to choice for high performance racing boats.
For control lines, we typically recommend Double Braids, particularly for the portion which is either cleated or is handled by the sailor. If you control line system requires a 'secondary' line (such as on a Laser vang, for example), a single braid high tech line such as Dyneema or Spectra is appropriate.

Line for sailboat main halyards, jib halyards, and spinnaker halyards. For advice on selecting the right halyard, see the information at the bottom of this page.
A halyard line is the rope that pulls the sail up the mast. On some small sailboats, this might be a short 20 foot length of basic 5mm line. On larger, performance boats, this might be 80 feet of high tech double braid line. No matter what type of halyard line you need, West Coast Sailing has you covered. Shop diameters between 4 mm and 12 mm including favorites such as Marlow Doublebraid, Robline Admiral 5000, Dinghy Control Line, Sirus 500, and more.

If you are replacing an existing line, the easiest way to determine what diameter you need is to match what you already have. This can be done with a caliper or by close estimation with a tape measure. If you've previously used a 7mm halyard and it has performed well, another 7mm line is likely a great choice. In most applications, there is some flexibility in the exact diameter that can be used. Most blocks, for example, have an 'ideal' diameter (ie, the line diameter that runs most effectively though the block's sheave) but also have a range so that you can run a slightly thinner or slightly thicker line. If you have a halyard that is getting hung up in your rig, stepping down 1-2mm might help the halyard run more efficiently. If you have a larger boat or rig and want to run a thinner halyard, consider a double braid line that features a Dyneema or spectra core for strength.
For halyards, we typically recommend a line with double braid construction because they hold their shape well under load and when cleated or in a clutch.

If you are replacing an existing line, the easiest way to determine what diameter you need is to match what you already have. This can be done with a caliper or by close estimation with a tape measure. If you've previously used a 7mm sheet and it has performed well, another 7mm line is likely a great choice. In most applications, there is some flexibility in the exact diameter that can be used. Most blocks, for example, have an 'ideal' diameter (ie, the line diameter that runs most effectively though the block's sheave) but also have a range so that you can run a slightly thinner or slightly thicker line. If you have a sheet that is getting hung up in your rig, stepping down 1-2mm might help the sheet run more efficiently. If you have a larger boat or rig and want to run a thinner sheet, consider a double braid line that features a Dyneema or spectra core for strength.
For control lines, the exact choice can vary based on preference and type of boat sailed, but typically we recommend a standard single braid (soft hand, great for mainsheets on smaller boats!) or a double braid polyester or double braid high tech line.

Durable Line Options for Recreational and Cruising Sailors
Outfitting your sailboat for recreational sailing or cruising doesn't mean sacrificing on line. At West Coast Sailing, we offer a variety of high quality, durable, and affordable line options designed for the recreational and cruising sailor. Line has come a long way in the past 5-10 years, with even the most entry level options offering more strength, durability, and uv resistance than ever before.
Spectra and Vectran line have extremely low stretch and are perfect for performance applications such as travelers or as part on a control set up.
If you're looking for line with near zero stretch, then our selection of Dyneema, Spectra, and Vectran lines are for you! These high tech lines have near zero stretch and perfect for performance applications such as travelers or as part on a control set up. These lines are uncovered and more likely to wear, but do feature UV coating to protect from sun damage.
Dynema® and Spectra® are made from UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene), a long chain, high strength, oriented strand, synthetic fiber with very high strength and high abrasion resistance. This fiber is also known as HMPE (High Modulus PolyEthylene). Dynema® is the Dutch company DSM Dyneema's brand of UHMWPE, used by Samson in their Amsteel and Amsteel-Blue dyneema lines. Honeywell International produces a similar UHMWPE fiber, marketed as Spectra®. Both Dyneema (Dynema) and Spectra offer nearly identical characteristics are can be used interchangeably in sailing applications, depending on where you source your line.
Made from a LCP (liquid crystal polymer) fiber, Vectran exhibits high strength, excellent creep and abrasion resistance, excellent flex/fold and chemical resistance, and outstanding heat and cut resistance. Vectran is an alternative to Dyneema or Spectra and less stretch and creep. Many think Vectran is the ultimate fiber, though it does not have quite the fatigue life or UV resistance of Dyneema or Spectra. Also it is a little heavier and will not float.
Dyneema, Spectra, and Vectran lines are recommend for use in applications where low to zero stretch is the core requirement. It's common to see these lines used as halyards, in sail control line systems, as travelers, or even as replacements for wire rigging in some performance applications. Since most low stretch Dyneema, Spectra, and Vectran lines are a single-braid without a cover, they are not recommended for applications where the line needs to be cleated and uncleated often. In those use cases you'll want to consider a line with a cover, such as a high performance dyneema or spectra core line with a heavy duty polyester cover.
The Dyneema, Spectra, and Vectran lines on this page are Single Braids. The exception is the Robline Dinghy Vectran, which has a Vectran core.
Shop our selection of Shockcord & Bungee plus floating Polypropylene Line
Shockcord, or bungee, is used on small sailboats to secure daggerboards, centerboards, hiking straps, and more. This stretchy line is useful anywhere you need give in an attachment point. Polypropylene is a floating line commonly used as a bow line on small boats such as Optimists and Lasers.
Shockcord is a unique type of line that stretches and then recovers back to the original length. The core is comprised of parallel strands of round latex rubber yielding 85% to 100% elongation and recovery, with a polyester cover. West Coast Sailing offers a high quality shockcord in a range of diameters.
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer material that has a wide variety of uses. For sailors, it offers a line that is tough, flexible, and strong yet lightweight enough to float which makes this ideal for dinghies and small keel boats. It is commonly used as a dinghy tow rope, an economy dinghy mainsheet, or even as a spinnaker take down line on larger keel boats.
