Bow shackles are best for multidirectional loads. Their large interior opening allows plenty of articulation especially when attached to a round bail. These are 'forged' shackes, meaning that they are polished to a high luster and are stamped with the screw pin diameter. The breaking strengths shown are derived from weights supported by 80% of the length of the shackle pin, similar to the length spanned by an appropriate block's headpost.
Stamped stainless steel shackles are used on many small boat blocks from Harken and are available separately for use in a variety of applications. The breaking strengths shown are derived from weights supported by 80% of the length of the shackle pin, similar to the length spanned by a block's headpost. Stamped shackles are appropriate for low loads. For higher loads, select forged and forged high-resistance shackles instead.
Ronstan uses the term D Shackle to describe their standard shape shackles. These are available in standard, long, and wide configurations and a variety of pin diameters and sizes.
